As an artist/illustrator, have you joined The Association of Illustrators? the aoi dot com. They can advise you on any grants/benefits you could apply for, and will help with contract advice, etc. Do you have a contract with your comic book client? you should be entitled to some of the fee upfront; that`s how it works- even if the client decides not to proceed with the project you are entitled to a `kill fee` for work already done. No professional client expects the illustrator to do the whole project without some payment upfront. You can check out the forum boards of the Aoi for free for lots of advice from other illustrators. Actually, I saw the AOI in person just yesterday! And I am considering joining them, but once all this comic stuff is over and I can produce some illustration that is true to my vision/skills. Thanks though

I doubt I can have them look over my comic contract now, as it's already signed and dealt with...
