What brand of car OP?Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.0

As you bought the car privately and not from a dealer or garage it seems that caveat emptor applies here.
As others have asked, it is important to qualify what you have paid for the car, and what it was.
Assuming it is the aforementioned nine hundred pound alfa romeo, then it would not be reasonable for you to ask the seller for your money back.
This is a great example of inspecting a car (or getting it inspected) BEFORE you buy it.
Did you check the car over, did the seller stop you looking under the car?0 -

You can if they've described the car as being in great condition/free from rust or along those lines.
While theres no implied terms about quality in private sales, it does still have to match any description made about it. If it lists a cd player, the cd player should work etc.You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0 -
Trading standards wont be interested in a private sale.0

OP you should of had the car checked out BEFORE you purchssed it, not after. AA or RAC inspections might cost you an extra few quid but its worth it for peace of mind. As said above, trading standards wont be interested in a private sale.
If the car really is that bad, break it for spares to get a few quid back, or if you cant be bothered, scrap it, get a few quid back and put that towards another car.0 -
My advice would be to ask for help on a respectable and trustworthy site like Pistonheads.0

I concur, the gentleman drivers over at PH will take pleasure in explaining how you ended up in this small quandary both concisely and in-depth, possibly with the aid of diagrams.
However they do tend to specialise in MX5's and 320D's0
