Re-reading your post about having another baby on the way I think an estate may be better than a Civic.

Rover 75 is a good call, few on autotrader in budget, all diesels are over 100k excet for one so shows they can do it. I'd avoid the 1.8 as blow head gaskets too often and V6 will be thirsty.

Primera is also a good shout. I had an 03 plate for a while which was quite a nice spec, 1.8 petrol which cost less than an grand. I sold it to someone from London 4-5 years ago then saw it again a few years later as a taxi!

Other option may be a Skoda Octavia, I've got one at the mo and can just about fit everything in for a weekend away with my 6 month old.

Like the Fiesta? Get a Focus or for less money get a Mondeo.

Bigger cars are assumed to be dearer to run so cost less when 2nd hand.

  • Meriva? Bought our 06 plate with 102k,full m.o.t and full service history and one owner from new for £1550 privately, its only the 1.4 but is fine at 70mph just a bit sluggish up big hills but we are in rural Derbyshire.

Honda Accord estates fall into your budget. There is a choice of 2.0 iVTEC models (better on fuel), 2.4 Petrols (BEtter for pace) and Even some of the 22. Diesel models with over 100,000 miles available under £2k. Do your research re the diesels, something is niggling at me that they have some expensive faults.

I'd be happy with one of those. Reliable, have toys (including neat under floor storage) and loads of rooms for prams and paraphenalia. The petrols will go on for as long as you keep servicing them.
