self employed partner a 'homemaker' on mortgage application?

My broker has listed my self employed partner as 'homemaker' on our mortgage application. Is this ok or will he look like an additional burden on me? He only works part time due to childcare commitments and doesn't have full previous years' books (last year was not working for much of the year due to major operation; year before we spent more than half the year overseas due to my job; overseas the previous 3 years). We estimate he'll earn about £12k this year. On paper I can afford the mortgage on my own and all of the savings for the deposit are in my name but it still feels a bit like we're lying. So far the lender has only asked for documents relating to me (bank statements, salary slips etc).

A non-working spouse is treated as a dependent by mortgage lenders. Someone unable to provide proof of income would be such a dependent.

Provided affordability is good, it should make no difference. I don't see what the lender could ask for, TBH?

Lying? About what? If you were trying to get fictitious income taken into account, then you'd be lying. What you are doing is perfectly normal.

  • Or you could get them to declare they are self employed and contract type as seasonal/piecework of which most lenders wont take. Your issue with whats done is that lenders share info. If one saw as houseperson and another app as self emp, this will trigger discrepencies. It'd probably done to override an underwriter intervention. If it'd not true as per the form and your uncomfortable with it, get them to change it.
