Thanks for the help. I decided to just speak to the bank about this and it seems to be much less of a problem than I had thought.

When were the bank informed of the death?0

Usually on death, the bank will cancel all direct debits and cheques and return them as account holder deceased. No charge levied. There would be no expectation of cheques being issued a payments attempted after death. So, it seems strange that there have been numerous items.
Death does not prevent charges being levied or interest being charged but returned items due to being deceased would not be normal. All this assumes the bank knew the account holder was deceased. If they didnt then it appears some fraudulent activity may have taken place.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only.
