overseas marriages legally binding or not?

What's the legality with say for example a muslim marriage in Pakistan in the eyes of the UK courts?

If they are seen as legal then why did Mick Jaggers (?) marriage in India/Pakistan not count legally in UK?

If a UK muslim marries a Pakistani female and she lives here for 2 years can she divorce him through the UK courts (and claim half his assets) - No UK ceremony was done.

Mick Jaggers wedding was in Bali. To be legal in the UK they would have had to have civil ceremony as neither were residents of Bali. that rule is complicated.
But if the marriage is one where one of the couple is resident of the country the marriage took place in, the rules are different.
What sorts of marriages qualify for spouse applications?
As long as the marriage was legal and recognised as such in the country in which it took place and the parties
to the marriage were permanently resident there (being abroad for a short period or on a temporary visa
does not exclude this possibility) then the marriage qualifies under the immigration rules. One thing to
watch out for is to ensure that a religious marriage is either automatically recognised as a marriage in law in
the country where it took place or that the proper civil marriage certificate has been issued.
Providing these requirements are met, valid marriages could include:
    • arranged marriages (although the parties must have met at the time of the application for a visa)
    • marriages where one party is absent or officially represented at the ceremony by someone else
    • tribal or other customary marriages
    • religious marriages
    • polygamous marriages (as long as only one spouse ever comes to the UK - legal advice should be
sought prior to such an application).

Marriage legality when married abroad is very complicated and needs a specialist solicitor (pref specialism in Islamic weddings and divorce) if going for divorce. Also advice from their local Holy Man would be advised as it is a very tricky area

Sounds complicated. All I know is that I am from the USA, and married my Brit in the USA. Our marriage is recognized and binding in the UK.
