How to find who tried to "slam" my phone service?

I got a letter from BT this week to say "sorry to see you go, there is an order to transfer your phone service to another company, this will happen next week" or words to that effect.
As I have not signed up for any new service, I phoned BT and they say they have now cancelled the transfer order. They said they could not see which company my service was to have been transfered to as all they had available was the order number for the transfer.
Is there any way I can find out which company was behind this attempt to transfer my phone srvice without my consent? I can't see much use complaining to the regulator if I don't know this.
BTW I am ex-directory, have never signed up for any call packages with anyone, have not enquired about any call packages, have not had any sales people come to the door etc etc, so I am mystified how this apparent "slamming" has come about.

Sorry I can't help, but something like that happened to my sister but it was her gas supplier changing.
Oh and her husband had his identity stolen.
I don't think you will get the info unless they contact you to ask why you cancelled.0 -
Well I hope they do ask why I cancelled (if it is possible to cancel something you never asked for), or perhaps send me a "welcome pack" or even try to bill me...0

You can complain to Ofcom about it here - they can then look into it and request the details from BT/other telco's.
BT also have a couple of pages on slamming here with advice on what to do.
Normally, (I think) the BT telephone number on the "sorry you are leaving letter" can tell you who the other telco is/was (try again is my advice) but if not (probably for competition reasons), the wholesale part of BT will have this information and can supply it to the regulator etc..

i had the same thing happen to me, woke up one morning dad ringing mobile asking why he cant get through on landline i could receive incoming calls at all. i could ring him back but had a different phone number when he done 1471. next day no phone at all then no internet either! they did sort it in the end it was all their fault my details hadnt been upgraded (when i moved 2 years ago!) and someone from my old address had asked for a landline to be installed there.although they had the right address to send me my bills etc. wish i had pushed harder when they gave me 1 month free internet and phone but i was sooo glad to get it sorted! and i had to have a new contract for my internet...bloody useless i reckonspanky xx
