Hi

I've sold my car (privately, not to a garage) and the person is coming to collect it on Saturday, as i'm being paid in cash I want to write a receipt to the person buying it but need help on what i could write on the receipt so it is all legal and binding (if that makes any sense)?

Any advice or tips would be great, thanks

I think there's a template form on whatcar.com or which.

    Update: Here it is http://www.whatcar.com/images/subscription/usedcarreceipt.pdf

See this aa proforma invoice/receipt for private sellers. Print 2 copies, both of you sign them and each gets one.

Add the exact time the deal is done in case the buyer gets caught on camera/parks illegally etc after driving off.

Don't bother. If it's a private sale you have the money, he has the car, the V5C is completed (timed as well as dated) and that is that. The rest is all barrack room lawyer nonsense.

Something like the above, filled out twice and signed by both of you. One copy each.

As a buyer, I feel more confident that I have a piece of paper to 'prove' ownership (which the V5 doesn't)

As a seller, it helps me remember when I sold, to who, for how much and at what mileage.

    Thanks guys

Great templates, think i'll use the AA one, the exact time/date the sale took place is brilliant advice never thought about speeding/parking tickets etc!

I did think about not bothering with a receipt as, like you say, cash is mine car is theirs, V5C is completed.

Just be careful of fake notes, especially if it is a large amount of cash.

You could also consider asking to see their driving licence and copying it or taking details off it as proof of Id if there are problems, of course they may not agree to this.

That was another worry of mine fake notes, I could ask for driving licence but if they do say no what do i do?

If I was a buyer, I don't think I would agree to giving a private seller my driving licence details. To be honest, I don't think I would be too comfortable giving them my address. (Although having said that, the buyer should fill in the V5 with his/her address and leave it for the seller to post, so no choice I suppose.)
  • What could a seller possibly do with a driving licence number? :|
It's an optional field on the form anyway.

Is your local bank open on Saturday? Go there with the buyer and pay the notes in before handing over the car. That way you get the genuineness of the notes confirmed.......or not.
