Does this gas consumption look normal?
Options
Hi,
I want to run this by other people and see if it looks right.
I am a single person living in a single bedroom flat. I don't have a gas cooker. Npower is my gas supplier, and I'm on "Gas NGT 24hr Standard Product" tariff.
My bill from mid-december to beginning of April came to £213. This was based off a prediction based off of my previous usage. I was predicted to have used 274 units.
However my actual usage was over twice that: 571 units. When entering it into my online meter reading form it gave me a warning saying that the figure was implausable! The eventual cost is going to be over £400 for that period, although i've only paid the predicted cost so far.
I'm wondering if this seems 'plausable' to you. I'm wondering if a boiler fault I had recently could be to blame (underperforming?). I'm also wondering if it ever works to ask one's gas supplier to waive some of the charge. Also if there's a better tariff for me. Also, direct debit monthly (fixed) suggests £57 per month. I don't know if that's high or low.
Thanks in advance.

Seems perfectly plausible to me. Im in a bigger house, but also cook on electric and the house is VERY well insulated. My gas bill from 6th March to 17 April (42 days) was £238. I took the readings myself.
Got to remember we had a REALLY cold Feb and March - so most people have used double what they normally would for those months.0 -
Firstly is your meter m3 or cu ft. If metric the units seem ok but the price is hideous, that unit use over 3.5 months would cost me £235.0

With npower a large chunk of standing charge is paid over winter through more units being charged at tier 1 prices. This can be £123 over four months (where an equal distribution would cost £53).
They are stopping this seasonal weighting in May when they will be changing to a flat daily standing charge. You may be due a small refund come April as you have already paid too much last winter.0 -
I too have a horrendously high bill! NPower too. Will watch this space.Loving the sunny days!0

Mines NPower too - but Im on a daily standing charge, so its not weighted (its the fixed Oct 13 tariff), and after doing a check on the comparison sites, for my usage its still the 3rds cheapest. The two that beat it are £1.67 and £12.70 per year cheaper - so nothing really ..... and one of THEM is an NPower Tariff.0

I suggest you consult a comparison site for a better deal.
e.g. 274 m3 of gas would cost you less than £160 with Ebico ... and I suspect there may be a cheaper option for you than Ebico0 -
Been puzzleing over your £400+ bill for 571 units of gas
From the figures you must have a Metric gas meter, which produces appx. 11.2 chargeable Kwh per meter unit - 571 Meter Units = 6395Kwh
However when I cost the Kwh at a very high 5 pence each, allow for a 22p per day Service Charge at £23.32, all plus VAT at 5%. it still only comes to £359 ! ?
Perhaps you could post the actual prices on your bill, and the insulation qualities of the flat0 -
Sounds plausible for me, despite not knowing details about your house. We moved late last year and I started to write down and submit meter readings on the first of every month - I suggest everyone else to do the same. It will allow you to keep track of your usage and give you an idea of how much you may have to pay."Learn how the system works and exploit it while you can..." - best advice I ever had while studying0
