I installed the original Mocrosoft KB891711.exe update on my Win98 system and had the same probs as others with blue screens, pc restarting on its own, freezing, crashing and pc excessively slow. It showed in start up list in misconfig and in task monitor. Now after uninstalling the original one completely and reinstalling the new update on April 12th it still is in the start up list as ticked but not in task monitor, its still crashing but not as much and its not restarting on its own now but the constant freezing and hanging is making it very difficult to use the pc. Also when I run Dr Watson it states that the componant kb891711 has changed the windows system... Any ideas?
Thanx

Well when I uninstalled it I left it completely off for a day or so and it seemed to have left the machine with problems even though it had been completely uninstalled from everywhere too, so I don't know what it did to my system but it was perfectly alright before.
I havent tried it yet by unticking the start up but I could do, not sure how much difference there is with 1st and 2nd edition win98 though. I don't understand why they made it that way to be in start up and thought it would be for a reason so I left it that way and with the probs still being there after uninstalling before I didn't think it would make much difference. The second update was supposed to correct the problems but somethings happened somewhereThanx

Tried the untick the KB891711 in start up and the system is behaving exactly the same althought Dr watson now states nothing obviously unusual now. To click on something or use anything it takes about 35 clicks to finally work then the next is the same and the next so everything takes agesssssssssssssss to perform, cant scroll up or down without same prob just doing anything. I repaired explorer just in case and no change. I think its done something to my system that update but I don't know whatThanx

I had exactly the same problems with my Win98 system, but everything has been OK since I unticked KB891711 from the startup list. However I haven't tried to reinstall the latest critical updates  because it is included again and I don't want more of those kind of problems, thanks very much! I just hope I'm not leaving myself wide open for other problems.......
I expect one of the brilliant techie types will be along shortly to help you out - they always seem to come up trumps! Best of luck
