VW Golf 2.0 - ABS Fault?
I am due a service but have suddenly last night developed "ABS Fault" on the dash and now a light is on?
i am just hoping that this isn't costly (always the way eh?!)
Secondly is this safe to drive?
I check on the internet and it seems its a common light/fault to do with a sensor?
Is there anything I can do to reset or clean this (maybe a dirt build up one site mentioned)? or likely how much this is to cost at a garage?
Brakes feel no different, but need to get it checked out - just wanted to brace myself for the shock
Would anyone recommend any VW GOLF websites for maintenance and tips as I have very basic maintenance skills
Thanks

Sorry, don't run a VW so can't offer specific help, but in general, ABS is a 'fail-safe' set up, in that, if a fault is detected, you revert to having 'normal' braking, so bear in mind, you'll have no ABS if you need it.
Whenever I've decided to do any DIY, I buy the relevant Haynes manual and take photos before I start taking bits off!
PS a quick Google for VW forum brings up quite a few options?0 -
very common fault on this brand
think joining a few vw fan boy sites would be your best bet and asking for a guide0 -
Ok i'll have a scan around the internet - thanks0

Could be a dodgy connection to the ABS sensor. Could be a faulty wheelbearing. Could be worse.
Without knowing the codes it could be anything. Get a code reader. Make sure it reads ABS ones. Cheap 2 button ones probably dont.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
How old is the car and does it have tyre pressure monitoring or traction control? I had the ABS light come up on my 56 plate Octavia followed almost immediately by the TPM and TCS lights which was caused by a corroded ABS ring on one of the rear wheels which doesn't seem that unusual for a car this age.
It's all guesswork though unless you can do a diagnostics scan yourself to see what the error code is as there's a few different causes.
