DVD & CD Drives not recognising disks

Hope someone can help, my CD and DVD drives have suddenly decided not to recognise any disk I put in. I have burned a disk on the CD Drive today so it is still working but I am wanting to install some new software and cannot get either drive to recognise there is a disk in. It is not just this disk, I have tried with several other DVD's and music CD's to no avail. I followed troubleshooter but it wanted me to uninstall the driver, at which point I became chicken, if I do this then how do I install the driver again? Anyone out there that can help an non technical chicken?

you can use system restore to go back to a date when you know it last worked

Thanks for the quick response! I have 2 drives and to be honest have no idea when I last had them working, I also have a laptop which I mainly use now, just wanting to put a webcam on desktop for Skype.
