REM also help with travel and other 'incidentals' can creep up on you and really add up, Macmillan for example have their own transport system in many areas of the country.

    Per month :

    - travel to hosp £170
    - parking in hosp £37
    - extra fuel bill £30

Just these few add to an extra £237pm, if loss of earnings were added just for the days lost to hospital visits then another £860 could be added to the total making nearly £1100pm. So where help exists - get it !

Thanks Richie. Sorry, who are REM?

We have 5 visits to hospital this week and the train fair is about £100 in total.

I've checked what benefits my friends recieves and it is income support - she's been in receipt of it for years so I guess the DLA won't be back-dated.

REM .. .. just means remember. The DLA [high rate care] would never be backdated simply because you haven't claimed till you claim as it were. Arguably [technicality] with a DS1500 you do not have to have to wait the usual qualifying 13 weeks before you can apply for DLA 'care component', with a DS1500 that 'care' is awarded from the point a DS1500 is signed without the three month qualifying period.

Income Support along with JSA [IB] & ESA {IR] and Pension Credit Guarantee Credit, can get help with necessary travel costs to receive NHS treatment. ask the hospital you are travelling to before you travel. Whichever way keep all receipts for travel you should eventually get them reimbursed by the hospital hospital social services department concerned.

Macmillan in 2 areas close to me provide their own community volunteer transport. I've no idea what the state of play is where you live, so you must ask, clearly this would be a local and not an inter county provision. The BEL line [0800 88 22 00] is a good starting point for many of your questions. The CAB is better, but I recognise they are 'under the cosh' in terms of busy-ness as indeed you will also be, so start with the BEL line.
