Once you have sent your ESA50 form...

What happens???????

My sister sent her ESA50 from in on 18th march and hasn't heard anything yet. The deadline was 11th April, which was only last week, but what happens now? I heard that if you don't hear within 2-3 weeks of sending it in, that you probably won't have to have an assessment, (not sure if this is true,) but if they have decided she doesn't have to have one, and she can migrate to ESA, will they let her know? Or will it just 'happen?'

Sorry for being thick.

It took another 5 months for me to have a face-to-face assessment after I had sent in my ESA50 so your sister could still have quite a wait! If the decisionmaking process takes more than 13 weeks then any benefit awarded would be backdated to the first day of week 14 (for new claimants, it is a bit different for people migrating from IB).
  • Were you a new claimant HB58? Or were you on IB before?

I was a new claimant, but I don't think it makes much difference to how long the process takes.

    hello,

everyone has to have an assessment, but in some areas it's a quicker then others, i can't remember how long i had to wait, but i think it was also in the region of 5 months from sending the esa50 off.

Hi. Thanks for your response, but that isn't accurate, that everyone has to have one. This (someone on here gave it to me the other week on here,) shows that approx 1 in 4 don't get called in for an assessment. In fact I have heard quite a few on here say they didn't have to go for one.

If anyone else has any help or info on my original post, I would appreciate it :) Is it unusual to have not heard anything, 4 weeks after posting it? The two people above say they waited 5 months, which seems massively long - especially if you're already on IB. And when we rang ATOS 2 weeks ago, to see if they had got the form, they said it was with the assessment team. So I can't imagine why it should take another 4 to 4 and a half months from then.

    Thank you.

It is futile to try and guess how long it will be, every case is different, every department has different workloads.

You have done the important part which is to phone ATOS to confirm receipt. Now all you can do is wait. You can keep in touch with ATOS every 2 weeks to ask if a decision has been made to require a face to face WCA.

Once that decision is made, if they say "no WCA is required" then you will shortly be transferred to ESA. if they say yes a WCA will be required it will then be a "how long is a piece of string?" contest to see how long you have to wait for your WCA.
  • I've sent in 3 ESA50's. The 1st one (new applicant) i got a phone call within 7 days of me sending in the form & a medical the week after. I got the result within 3 weeks. Year 2 i sent in the ESA50 and was not asked in for a medical and heard the result after 4 weeks. This time (Nov 12) i was again not called in for a medical and heard the result in 5 weeks. I am in Sunderland but i guess the wait varies from area to area.

Phone and ask if they have got the form, if so then a case of waiting to be honest. If they decide to award your sister ESA they will write to inform her the date it starts and what group she is in.
  • Thanks guys. They have got it, because we checked the other week. Guess it varies from area to area, and I think we will leave it another 2 weeks or so and then ring ATOS again.

i wouldn't try to tempt fate like that personally !,

unless your sister would benefit from the peace of mind (i.e. mental state), of knowing when it would be.

i thought as stated above, all new applicants would have to have an interview, although as you point out i am probably mistaken!.

i wonder if it's area specific as regard to the %, or profiling of some sort ?, i wouldn't count on them, being so intent on failing so many people to choose a somewhat random selection.

...unless it is just to alleviate their work load

good luck and sorry for the mis-information,

    regards
