Fencing, how high to keep a dog in?

it all depends on your dog - we only have a 4 foot fence and couldn't afford to replace it on both sides of our garden so made it clear on our home check that we couldn't take a 'jumper' our Lab has never tried to jump it and I've only once seen him put his paws up on it to try to say hello to next door's dog.
I know someone with mini schnauzers - one dog was fine and never strayed but the other was an escape artist - more getting through holes in the fence or digging than jumping though I think...
a puppy has different needs to a rescue but it's possible to get either to live along side cats (although make it clear to a rescue organisation that you have cats so they can take that into account). I'd recommend a breed rescue if you specificially want schnauzers and they will be able to give you specific support for the breed and may well be rehoming dogs with histories known rather which helps.0
