New haircut ideas please?

Can anyone suggest what I can do with my hair? It's so long that it's getting on my nerves and takes ages to detangle, to wash, dry, brush etc.

Currently it's long, thick and more or less straight-ish, with a bit of a kink, and I have a fringe, which is currently down to the end of my nose and so I brush it to the sides.

So, it's totally boring. Just a pair of curtains hanging down each side of my face.

I am looking for a new style which takes zero maintenance... that is to say, I will not put any "product" on it, ever, and I will not blow dry it or use curling tongs etc. I go swimming a lot and cannot be faffing with all that nonsense in the pool showers.

I just want to pull a brush through it and look great.

My boyfriend loves it long, but I hate it. So a style that kinda looks long (to please HIM) and yet is actually easy to manage would be ideal.

I'm quite an ugly cow so something that covers quite a bit of face would be good. I am very jealous of those pixie-faced ladies who can have a short back and sides and look great lol.

I don't mind having a perm. I am happy to dye, have highlights, steaks, dye my fringe a different colour etc. I had a bob before (with fringe) but I looked like a Norman soldier!

Is there some miracle new easy-to-maintain cut that I don't know about?

Any ideas?

  • Why not consider a layered style with a full fringe? I don't mean getting your hair cut short either.

Layers add a bit of interest and movement to the hair.

I have my hair layered & I pretty much don't have to do anything with it. Very easy to maintain too. I hate using products in my hair or using heat styling tools. I only ever blow dry my hair when I'm going out & even then I just scrunch dry it, no brushes involved lol.

Do a search on google and click in "images", that's the way I did it when I was looking for a new style. Many of the photos also show different coloured hair & higlighted hair aswell.

I wouldn't recommend a perm if your looking for a style which is low maintenance. You might find you have to do more with your hair, which isn't what your looking for.

You could do one of those Crea-Clip haircuts where you put a top layer in it! Pretty low maintenance, and looks a bit more interesting than just having it one length.

That is a brilliant idea. I think that is what I will do. Layered on top, and keep some length on the lower layers.

    Thanks

Thanks to you I watched the video. I'd be FAR too scared to do that myself! I'd end up looking like a scarecrow!

If it's long with a kink you probably have more wave/ curl than you think, so layers may make it stick out unless you are willing to style it. Shorter layers at the back and longer at the front will leave enough weight to keep the front neater.

If your hair is getting tangled maybe review your products, your brush/ comb or both. Is it tangly because the ends are damaged, your conditioner goes sticky part way through drying? Try styling your hair from wetter and use a super wide tooth detangling comb or Tangle Teezer.

Have you ever tried sock buns for a quick up do and sock bun curls? Do you use a leave in or wash out conditioner? Former saves time when washing and can be more intensive.

If you are swimming a lot how are you protecting your hair from the chlorine? That is pretty drying/ damaging on a regular basis, you may find this is contributing to your hair being tangled and unmanageable. Definitely would not be doing any damaging chemical treatments unless you are willing to spend time protecting and deep conditioning your hair frequently, ideally with coconut oil.

  • My hair was the same...but I loved it long and cried when I had it cut to waist length! Now I keep it at waist length - won't cut it shorter, with razor-cut layers and a long side fringe and it's really easy to maintain, though it does look 100% better if I blow dry it and stick some velcro curlers around the crown for a while or run some salt spray through it.

Have you experimented with products, OP? It is actually quite fun. Put some salt spray in after the pool, leave hair to dry and it'll be all fluffy :)

I would advise not having highlights or bleaching as they may go green. Also, any colour you put in will be stripped by chlorine fairly quickly. I'd recommend henna wax as a conditioning treatment once a week.

And you need some confidence! Those pixie-faced girls get away with short hair because they're confident! You've probably got an amazing figure from all the swimming, and won't be ugly at all.

    Good luck :)

I second all of this and would add plaits while hair is wet and left to dry overnight look amazing in the morning and if you dont mind heat one of the waver tools could be your new best friend.

Definitely go for some choppy layers in the crown of your hair- that way you keep the length but it takes the weight out of it.

It looks especially good with a statement fringe- I had this style with a choppy side fringe but I think it'd look good with a blunt straight across fringe too.

What kind of bob did you have out of interest? I think it's one of those cuts that suits everyone provided it's the right style of bob for their face and hair type. I love an a-line bob personally as it's long at the front but short at the back, so you have the best of both worlds! It suits most people as well.

Thanks for all the responses folks.

I followed that link to Youtube and am watching videos for ideas.

Maybe I should have it plaited into dreadlocks all over?

Your hair care desires sound very similar to mine!

If your hair is tangled in the morning try sleeping in a loose plait. The more time you spend with it plaited, or coiled up on the back of your head (those crocodile clips are really fast) the less time it can be getting into mischief. Pulling a wide comb, or even the brush, through the ends before the rest makes detangling much faster.
