Car insurance general questions

Hi

1. Are insurance companies able to check personal data like your address, weather you are unemployed/employed and who are working for?

2. Suppose an insurance company cancelled your policy because you used a wrong address. Would they blacklist you i.e. will other insurers know that you have previously had insurance cancelled or is this something they would not know about?

In what way exactly. Not that I am going to do it, the difference in saving isn't worth the risk and it's not like I don't have the money to pay. However I believe a lot of people lie about these things. How exactly do they find out about the above things.

Simply saying yes isn't really an answer.

Most companies now carry out credit and identity checks - and in the event of a claim, they'd be looking for proof that the the car and license are registered at the address you've registered the car at. If they become suspicious (and they generally are very good at spotting claims where someone has something to hide) then your claim will probably be handled by an internal fraud department...

Should the policy be cancelled for misrepresentation, this information will be logged on a database called Hunter which is shared between insurance companies. Most companies run batch queries against this database so you'll find that you might get away with setting up a new policy, but within a few days they'll know your policy was previously voided.

Spotting bent claims/non disclosure is fairly easy, it's proving fraud that's the issue. If you do it on something as easy to check as employment, address or driving license then that's just silly.

    1) They can perform credit checks on you at inception or when you have a claim.

They can google you and find information such as facebook and linkedin etc.

Ask to see your wage slips and / or contact your employer.

Check the electoral role and / or your vehicle log book.

The above is not exhaustive and the checks are generally carried out when you have a claim.

    2) Most companies enter you onto a fraud database which will make it very difficult for you to obtain any type of Insurance including motor and home. It can also flag up when you apply for credit or bank accounts and if a prospective employer (Or sometimes existing employer) performs checks they may well find it.

That is without the financial implications of them not paying your claim along with pursuing you for any money they have paid out to any third parties which the Insurer are legally required to do. They will then pursue you for the money, as you appear to own a house, they would find it easy to secure the money.

You also have the small chance of a fraud conviction and possibly a no insurance conviction.

You've obviously considered it for you to ask the question.

Im guessing you got quotes at both addresses?

They already have information on your itentions because.... You got a quote..

Its linked to you now. You got a quote at 2 separate addresses.

If youre not thinking of doing it why ask?

And you licence is registered to.. Your council tax bill is from?

I forgot about that which is a good point, some of the companies will have already picked this up and adjusted their quotes up for the OP along with possibly putting an alert on his name for their own use
