Weekend break in New York - hotel ideas?

I'm looking into a weekend break to New York for myself and my sister, possibly 2-4 Nov.

I've found a reasonable fare with American Airlines (£325 pp - is that reasonable, I think it is). I've never flown with them before, are they OK?

Also, looking for a good midtown (Times Square) hotel. Not too basic, but something clean and comfortable for a couple of nights, close to the theatres and shopping.

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks

  • Went to new york in nov 05 to see U2.Me and the wife stayed in the Hotel Metro .Ticks all the boxes, clean, tidy hotel, excellent buffet breakfast, eat as much muffins as you want.Only 200yards from Macy's ,and you are close by to the empire state building, infact you've got to look upto see it from the hotel room.

Check it out on tripadvisor, theres pictures of the hotel and gets good reviews for its price etc

I would expect there to be better deals around in terms of flight prices for November, although you may have to wait a few months to book. I'd personally be aiming for around £230-£250 for flights in November...

We stayed at the Skyline Hotel, only because it was the cheapest we could find! We were pleasantly surprised to be honest, it was a little walk to time square (about 10 mins) and the rooms were huge and clean but basic, the added bonus was the swimming pool to soak our weary feet! The reviews we read about this hotel werent great really but I would happily stay there again as we loved it. Enjoy yourselves!
p.s. i think we booked through thomson in the end

sorry it's a while since we went to NY so I can't help with hotels but I can really recommend you book a 'big apple greeter' (search that phrase on google). Basically it's a free service staffed by local volunteers to give you a taste of the real NY... they take you on a guided tour (based on your interests) for 2 or 3 hours. We had the most amazing 75 year old Jewish New Yorker take us and our three teenagers to some brilliant places (in about 4 ft of snow following a tremendous blizzard the day we arrived) and she even had a free subway ticket for us all to use! They refuse all gratuities.. they are all people who love to show their city. You do have to book it before you go though..via their website.
I can't recommend them highly enough... and my dh and children were all in awe too!
    Have a great time

I have stayed in the Westin Times Square, amazing hotel, it's about $300 per night but you can get 3 nights for the price of 2 so you will pay about £150 each for the 3 nights, the hotel is amazing, ultra modern, right in the heart of it, with heavenly beds and bathrooms - wonderful after a long day walking the town
