Yesterday our toilet seat broke. So went Tesco at 10pm last night to get new 1 as my 4 yr old was still awake. Late going to bed.
spent all morning trying to unscrew 1 of the bolts (under & at the back)
When I say broke:- the metal hinge has snapped on 1 side, so I managed to unscew the side that was still fixed to the toilet and take the seat completely off. --> This leaves a small round metal circle with the bolt going through the hole and screwed tightly.
After spending all morning trying to undo it and get it off, even though I am unsure of which way it unscrews, my hands and fingers are red raw. I have tried to used every tool, plyers ect possible but i cant get down and under the toilet as space/design.
I have also put a bit of baby oil as thought it may help ?
I cant put new cheap toilet seat on until i geat this nut/bolt outand it is si tight im scared i will break the toilet.
Can anyone help - if looking at the toilet it is the left 1 that i need to remove 0 should i be unscrewing it clockwise or anti-clockwise ?

Sitting here I wouldn't be sure which way it turns but I'm pretty certain both fixings will turn the same way - so use the one you've removed and work it out from that ensuring that you have the removed fixing in the same direction etc as the one you are trying to get off.
You may find WD40 sprayed on and left for a while helps to free it. Baby oil is probably too thick to penetrate.Adventure before Dementia!0 -
When this happened to ours the only way we could get it off was by cutting it off with an angle grinder.0

Is the bottom part of the fixing metal or plastic? they are normally plastic if so just make a split in the nut and it will come free. if it is metal perhaps do as Westondave says and apply some wd40 and leave it to soak in for half an hour.
then try to tighten it fractionally and then undo it.The more you listen the more you hear

Hi,
it unscrews anti-clockwise, I had this problem before, and ended up unscrewing the actual threaded bit, it screws into the top bit. You should be able to get a good grip on it with a pair of pliers or vice grips, it is only in by 3/4 threads, so should come away quite easy.
The reason these become so hard to get out, is because of the condensation in the bathroom, they eventually get rusted up, and even with plastic nuts are hard to get off.
When you put your new one on, lightly smear the threads with vaseline, it will help to prevent rusting, and make it easier to come off in the future.0 -
Thank You to all of you who wrote advise.
I sprayed it and soaked it with WD40 and when using a teatowel, I managed to twist it off. :j
My dad was due to come up tomorrow with his hack saw and cut it off if he couldnt get it off either, but its now off and i have spent the day cleaning the whole toilet.
Now need to have a look a decent toilet seat, as I have a cheap plastic £3.97 one i bought from tesco the other night but :think:wondering if this will last. My broken one was a glittery novelty one.:think:Any ideas for a cheap quality toilet seat ?
Any shops got any offers ?
