My bold - Exactly. 3 days in 25 years probably makes you a freak rather then the norm!
Is 10 days per year off sick actually average?
Or is that just for the public sector?

    Haha, a term I take as a healthy compliment - thanks ;)

I would love to have 6 weeks holiday when the normal is 4. But being a freak instils the rationale of a worker not a shirker :D

Each to their own I guess.

Also, wouldn't a fractured ankle take a little longer than a day to mend?
It may take weeks to mend, the question should be - would it prevent me from carrying out my normal duties or should it be used to extend the time to watch daytime TV?

I guess your right. It's a tough pill to swallow, but swallow it I must.

The level of scrutiny in this line of work is almost reaching critical levels for me, which doesn't help. I may re-train for something else soon.

    Thanks.

This is what makes me angry/sad.

If you love your job don't let the bureaucracy divert you. If you don't - don't expect it to be better anywhere else!

Sugar - even the most determined worker would be hard pressed not to have 3 days in 25 years.

I wear hats - not often seen without one - I take it off to you. :)

That question was inferred in the comment, and was exactly my point. Some would not be able to do their job with certain injuries/health problems. You obviously were, hence your admirable sick record.

Anyway, better get back to watching Jeremy Kyle.

When i managed people I had and used the discretion to make such decisions and my managers have exercised the same.

Please don't be too despondent Allspent.

OP, less than 30 days in three year is an average of two weeks off a year (assuming you work a 5 day week). That amount of time off is going to activate most large company's absence procedures. Short term, unrelated, absences are often treated more robustly than those caused by an underlying medical condition (whether strictly a 'disability' or not) or a one-off longer term absence.

For example - an employee suffers from an known illness that makes her particularly vulnerable to chest infections... she has triggered the absence procedure, but all absences are for certified chest infections - total absence over two years = 6 weeks

For example - an employee has a heart attack, is in hospital, and is off sick for 4 months recovering - total absence over two years = 4 months.

For example - an employee has had less time off in total than the other two, but her absences are unrelated: 3 days for a cold; 2 days for a twisted ankle; 4 days for a sickness bug; 1 day for a migraine; 5 days for flu, 2 days for tooth abcess, 3 days for a swollen knee = total absence over two years = 4 weeks.

The third employee is much more likely to lose their job than the other two.

I have been a manual worker for most of my life, it slowed me down, was even uncomfortable, but as for 'stopping' me from doing a job - only lack of breath or hospital would do that ;)

My wife on the other hand is office based, gets full pay for 6 months, 1/2 pay for 6 six months. I consider her a wimp and she has only managed to have a few days sick in her 20 years of work.

As I say, we are not robots (present company excluded) and if your job means you can't come in for fear of spreading, the so be it.

I think I may have to retrain ;)

ps, the trouble with Jeremy Kyle is it's like being at a family party for me- it has no shock factor or entertainment value.
