House Insurance - Weekends

Hey Guys,

I am currently purchasing my first property, now I am not going to be living permanently in this property and I will be staying at home for the next year and going to the property at weekends only to carry out work and get it to where myself and partner want it.

Now where do i stand on house insurance on this? Do I need special insurance or will standard be acceptable?

Many Thanks!

Most normal home insurance requires the property to be your main residence but in this case you are effectively saying it is a second home in which case it really should be insured as such until you are ready to move into it.

If it is a second home, some insurers will require your primary residence to be insured with them also.

You say that this is the first property you have bought so I assume you don't already have a buildings policy anywhere else.

Get some quotes and speak to the insurer directly to explain the circumstances - many will allow up to 30 consecutive days unoccupancy so as you will be there at the weekends this would not be the issue if they consider you the permanent resident. You will need to tell them about the type of renovation work you are planning.

You may need to look at unoccupied insurance and most insurers will want to know what type of renovations are taking place - there may be endorsements / conditions on the cover.

    Maybe try
