Its impossible to get a full debit card until you are 18. You can get electronic Solo and Electron debit cards from age 16... however some banks offer debit cards to under 16s. For example, from age 11 Barclays will offer Electron cards and Natwest Solo (both with parental consent of course!)
When looking for current account, always look for good interest rates too. For example Lloyds TSB pays a good rate on its under-19 account; but you have to be 16 or over to get a debit card on this account.0 -
but can u use the under 16's debit cards on the net?0

Electron and Solo cards clearly won't be accepted as much as other cards. You should check out the websites you wanna shop at before deciding which debit card to go for. Most websites list the payment cards they will accept, so check that out first.
I never had a debit card until I was 18, so I can't really say how much Electron and Solo are accepted on the internet since I have never had one.0 -
as far as I am aware the reason that most financial institutions won't issue a full debit card (i.e Maestro/Switch) until you are 18 is that as a minor you are not legally liable for any overdraft that may occur & the basic debit card (Solo) was mainly designed for ATM access which is what the majority(but not all, I know) of minors want(or need) - even when you reach 18, a full debit card is not guaranteed - it depends on either what sort of account you have, or, if you have the right sort of account, your credit score rating (income, expenditure - that sort of thing)0

Wow! How times change. Way back when I was 17, I used to bank with Barclays. I was given a Visa Delta card on my account (a full debit card) with ease! When did the rules change?

It has always been the rule that under 18's are not eligible for debit or credit cards, they must have made a mistake.0

Or someone ''accidently'' added a year to their age perhaps?
Would'nt be allowed to happen now of course as id would have to be provided when opening the account.
