Have you tried looking at Trip Advisor? There'll be sections on Venice including a forum.
Last time I went I found that being anywhere near St Marks square cost a fortune, you need to duck into the back streets for better value. To get around walking is good but if you want to travel on the canals get a water taxi - the gondolas are hideously expensive.
Weather should be lovely at that time but remember you'll need to cover arms if you go into any of the churches.

If hot tubs and beaches in May are what you want then Venice probably isn't the best choice for you.

Both can be found but you'd be paying a premium for rare facilities in an already expensive location. There are beaches but the very northern part of the Med isn't particularly warm, or unpolluted, at that time of year.

We went in May last year. Weather was comfortable with the sun shining but chilly in the evening. No guarantee the weather will be the same in 2013!

As ellay864 suggests, take a look at the forums on Trip Advisor. We found these great when planning our Venice trip. Found out about the best transfer from VCE (local express bus), the water taxi's, which transport tickets to buy, restaurants to try etc etc. Lots of people on there who will be happy to help with your questions but also worth taking time to read past forum posts or use the search facility as the same questions get asked over and over again...

It's the most expensive place I've ever been. Meals for two were regularly over 100 euros and accommodation is very expensive. Anything near the grand canal or St Marks Square is a premium, so stay elsewhere and walk. Don't get water taxis if you can help it as they cost 70 euros but you can get a water bus ticket for unlimited use for a length of time.

One afternoon we got a waterbus to the free beach/lido and it was a nice few hours in the sun. It's a different island where cars are allowed. We also went to Murano to see the glass making and Burano for the lace making history.
Don't listen to me, I'm no expert!
  • There's a thread about Venice quite frequently so try putting 'Venice' in Forum Search above - should give you lots to read - great place by the way

Hi we are staying over at Jesalo, its across from Venice, has Beaches (supposedly blue flag) and also supposedly better weather. There is a few hotels around here and there is regular inexpensive travel into Venice.

If you want beaches, don't go to Venice! Venice is for strolling through quaint streets, eating wonderful food, gondola trips, strolling round old churches, drinking strong Italian coffee and romance. It's not noted for its beaches.

We went on a budget. We stayed a 2 min walk if that from St Marks in a 3 star hotel called the pellegrino e commercio and ate 2 euro pizza and 10 euro pasta for dinner, sandwiches for lunch and the odd ice cream or pastry!

We used the public water taxi and skipped the expensive gondala rides.

You can go to the Lido for the beach not sure how nice it is as we went in cold February!

We used the water boats to get about and a LOT of walking.

We paid around £450 for the two of us but I expect it would be more in May.

We go at least once a year so if you ask specific questions I will try to help.

The cheapest way is to fly into Treviso and get the bus for 10e return per person.

Hotels with hot tubs (if there are any will be very expensive) but I can give you some pointers on some nice ones.

    Also restaurants.

You can buy multi day passes for the Waterbuses (Vaporetto) I prefer the quieter areas away from St Marks. We love Venice and have walked all over it. Lots of interesting things to do and if you want a beach you can go either to Lido across the lagoon from Venice or Jesolo which is further away. Although for four days there is enough to keep you in Venice and its islands (Burano, Murano)
