HELP!!! Bankcruptcy on Friday

Hi all I'm new here and I am about to declare myself bankrupt this Friday as I have unsecured debts totalling approx £65000. I'm just wondering what to expect in court as I feel sick, cannot eat, sleep or function due to the fear of the unknown. I am functioning on auto pilot and really don't even know how I am getting through the working week. All my friends tell me not to worry as some of them have already been through it but the fear and dread is consuming me. Does anyone have any words of wisdom before I'm lead to the gallows??!!

    Hi

Take a deep breath it will all be okay the court exprerience will be fine the staff are professional and will not judge you. Your papers will be checked by member of staff and fee taken. Sometimes the judge may want to see you sometimes not (in my case the judge made a point of seeing everyone) I was just asked to confirm my name and asked if I had taken legal advice-which I had. I was then declared officially bankrupt given my BR paper and that was it. All over and done with in hour and half.

Left court knowing that at last debt free and able to rebuild my life.
Sometimes you may receive a call from OR same day or a few days later it does vary.

Once you are declared BR you will be able to tell your creditors if they phone (although the OR will contact them all but this can take a few weeks).

Plan a treat for yourself for after court and start to look forward.

    All the best

Just to add to that, court is not scary in reality. Biggest risk on the day is boredom if you have to wait for any length of time. Make sure you take something to read, and money for the coffee machine etc.

Don't know about words of wisdom; but the truth of the matter is that everyone on here who has gone BR felt more or less the same as you are now.

And I think since I've been on here (getting on for three years now) everyone who's gone through it has said that it was a simple, not unpleasant experience with professional people who are courteous and completely non judgemental.

When I declared BR I did it at the High Court In London. I was half expecting to be dragged off to the Tower of London in chains. :)

It didn`t happen, of course. As has been said - it was all much easier that expected. I only wish i had done it much sooner.

    Good luck.

    Hi
As others have said it is not as bad as you expect. But it is the fear of the unknown and like you I was totally panic stricken, I could not eat, sleep or function either. Take a book and a drink.

The court staff are lovely, professional and friendly. Your paper work will be checked, the guy who did mine took me to a private room, went through it all, I think he asked where I got the money and I said I had saved it up, which I had. He said to wait and he would come and get me if the Judge wanted to see me. The judge did want to see me, and I nearly wet my pants! but it was totally fine, in fact the judge was wonderful. It was all over in 1.5 hours and I had got there half an hour too early so really an hour, and that included a call from the OR, as when I was collected by Matt to go back down to the office to get my signed stamped BO he told me the OR would give me a quick call.

The judge asked me a few questions, but had already read my notes on the last part of the form. He told me that I was not alone and to now go on with my life and wished me well. Oh he also asked did I know what I could not do as a bankrupt, I said yes and then he reeled them all off, like no credit above £500 not being able to be a director of a company, basically all the stuff you know already.

Wish you well for the day, when you come out you will feel huge relief and if anything like me burst into tears.

Thank you all so much!! I will definitely let you all know how I get on.
  • I went BR on the 4th April and like yourself was a right wreck, worried, not sleeping etc

Everything went as everyone said it would, and the relief is wonderful that piece of paper with that stamp is treated with great respect and when someone hassles me on the phone I just say Im number blah blah of 2013 at doo dah court and OR office is and it sure brings the conversation to a dead halt...after weeks of them yowping down the phone at me that number stops them in there tracks :D

Im not proud of hav:cool:ing to go BR but it could not be helped and was the best thing I have ever done after fighting a long losing financial battle.

Come join us in the April 2013 BR club, have a :rotfl: with us and life will look better on the afternoon of BR day.
Good luck hope all goes well x:j

What time you gotta be there Suggi?

Just stay calm, make sure you have all you need the night before and I am sure when you walk out that court you will think "heck was that IT":) it may seem surreal for a few days as well.

On my OR call in the court, it lasted all of 2 mins, just to confirm my name that the office would be Norwich and not mine as they were in overload with so many BRs and that was it.. done and dusted so to speak.
