Unusual issue, there is a black line vertically down my netbook screen (Acer Aspire 1810TZ) with a column either side of it about 4cm wide in total. Within this column all colours are wrong (blue showing as orange for example, but white is still white) but also everything is backwards, immediately on scrolling the mouse into the area it appears on the far side, scroll further over it moves backwards etc, all text is reversed). When I take a screenshot it does not show the error as I can see it. Please help me fix my computer!
This was 6 months out of date so I've changed it.

Would you know how to connect the lap top to an external monitor or TV? If so then does this output look fine (my guess is that it would be fine)
Does the display change if you carefully and gently twist the screen in your hands (nothing heavy handed just a few mm either way)
Does anything change if you apply gentle pressure at different parts of the screen?
It doesn't sound like a typical 'inverter board' problem which would be quite straightforward to fix.
As its a small screen lap top does it see plenty of travel, knocks and bumps?0 -

I ran my old laptop off an external monitor but cant find the monitor at the moment I may have "tidied" it to the back of the attic, if I can get to one I'll double check, but a print screen doesn't show it up.
Can't really twist the screen as such, but the little I can do causes flickering in the inverted bit. Similarly if I press on the screen with my thumb the flickering comes and goes, depending on where I put the pressure.
I only got it in the last month, it was my dads and he travelled with it a bit but didn't knock it much really, he is stupidly careful about these types of things. This was 6 months out of date so I've changed it.:j:j:j:j0 -
Can you try starting in 'safe mode'. Power off lap top completely and restart, hold down F8 key before windows starts and select 'safe mode' from the list.
Windows starts in safe mode with all sorts of text appearing on screen then eventually to what might seem a very low resolution windows log in screen.
Press ctrl/alt/delete and log on.
Questions
1) When starting in safe mode, with all the text on screen - was this bit of the start up routine subject to the screen distortion too?
2) When logged on to Windows in safe mode - do you see the screen distortion here.
This may help to determine if its a software/driver problem. Its unlikely but entirely possible.0
