Netgear wireless problem

Hi there.
Some techie help required if possible!
I've acquired a netgear wireless router (DG834) and am trying to get wireless connectivity on my home laptop. My ISP is talk talk (unfortunately!). I have been in touch with Netgear and it is set-up fine. It says I have excellent strength connectivity, yet when I try to access internet explorer it does not recognise that there is a connection. I've spoken to talk talk who say it's not their problem.
Does anyone have any ideas?? Netgear say they've done everything they can.
Thanks!
Simon

Dont confuse signal strengh with your connection to the internet

Basically, you have a wireless connection from your laptop to the router, then the internet connection from the router to the outside world.

Try 'hard wiring' the connection with the ethernet cable provided. See if that works

I take it you have connected to the router using 192.168.0.1, let it auto detect the settings, then entered your username and password?
  • Thanks very much Paul.

I've tried to hard wire the router but still no luck. And yes, I've tried connecting using 192.168.0.1 and setting up that way. Netgear got me to do that.

Could it be talk talk who have to adjust their settings??

    I'm stumped!!

Try manually entering the DNS server IP's into your router:

    Primary DNS server 62.24.199.13
    Secondary DNS server 62.24.199.23

    Alternative DNS Servers:
    Primary DNS server 62.24.128.18
    Secondary DNS server 62.24.128.17

There is no point trying to get your wireless connection working until it will work correctly via the Ethernet cable.

    Some suggestions:-

1-Can you plug the router into your Main BT Socket and see if this works.

2- You should see a green "i" led on the front of the router when it's connected to an ADSL signal.

3- Have you entered your username and password in the router's login screen?

4- On the router control pages, can you go to gateway status and see if it is obtaining an ip address.

5- What is the version of this router, is it the large grey box (ver 1) or the white one?

6- On your laptop START - RUN - CMD then type in the black screen :-
    ipconfig /all
Highlight the resultant text using the mouse (a bit fiddly) then Ctrl C to copy and Ctrl V to paste the text on this forum.

7- What was your previous connection method - modem or router?

You have to right-click and click Mark first and then highlight. You might find it easier to type:

    ipconfig /all > temp.txt
    notepad temp.txt

The last adapter "PPP adapter Talktalk new" implies you're connected directly to an ISP, presumably this is a standalone modem plugged directly into your computer.

What happens if you remove this from your network connections and unplug the device?

Is the Netgear router plugged into the phone line and logged in to TT? When it's working correctly thru the router you should be getting the DNS address shown under your ethernet connections (i.e. DNS should read 62.24.128.18 & 62.24.128.17 or similar)

    have you gone into

    http://192.168.0.1
    admin
    password

and put in your talk talk username and password and set the adsl settings to vcbased
    vpi=0
    vci=38

what does it say under the router status section? (If you are going to copy and paste this you will have to do the copy with the phone lead plugged into the router rather than the modem).

Completely different point, have you encrypted the wireless yet?
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
