Lifetime guarantee

Hi all, some advice needed please.

We bought a spade from B and Q in July 2011, it was covered by a lifetime guarantee.

It's broken...is our first port of call B and Q or because its more than a year old would we deal with the manufacturer. We do have the receipt.

Only issue with the manufacturer is that according to their website we should have registered the product within 30 days of purchase. Not that we were aware of this as there was no information on the packaging.

Any one know what our rights are. Thank you.

For warranties you would need to deal with the manufacturer, but because you didn't register the product they can refuse your claim. If this is the case then take it up with B&Q.

.....who will say that its "lifetime" was from July 2011 to now !!
  • Dont worry, just see how it is in a few years when you have had 5 handles and 6 spade heads yet its still the same spade ;)

As for the OP's question - ouch! The warranty is with the manufacturer, and they can apply any terms they wish on that. If a term was to register the purchase, then that means not having done so leaves you exposed. Unlucky.

Visit any blacksmith, I'll bet they can sort it out for you, whatever the problem. If you're in the SouthWest I can point you towards someone who'll do it for a song (possibly quite literally)

    Thanks for input everyone.
As the product is over 12 months old B & Q don't want to know so we will email the manufacturer and try them.

No doubt they will refer us to the 'terms and conditions' but we can but try.
Thought we were buying a quality product but obviously not the case.
Our first spade lasted 30 years....now that was a good one!!

How does the registration work, were you supposed to register by post or online?

If by post, then just tell them that you did send off the registration card and as far as you're concerned, your product is registered (they have a spade register?.....Really?)

Or, if they say you have to register online, tell them that you don't have a computer so you weren't able to do so.

I tried this with an iron a few years ago, I was supposed to register the product online, which I knew would result in untold spam emails containing "offers" and the like. So when it conked out, I contacted the manufacturer, citing their two-year guarantee (I also had the receipt AND the box.) They did make a bit of noise about the registration not being completed, i.e. I wasn't on their emailing list, but I did get my refund (vouchers for another iron, which I was happy with) when I told them that I wasn't online two years earlier and that I had only owned a computer for a couple of months.

    Might be worth a try?
