Exchanged Contracts - YAY (advice needed)

Morning all!
I hope i'm posting in the right section - feel free to nudge if not
I posted last month about starting to look for our first home (FTB) - well within a month we have found somewhere we love and have exchanged contracts! (eeek) and we move in next Friday (double eeek!)
The thing is, this is all very new and we have never rented before so this is a huge change and I was wondering if anyone had any advice about the best way to sort our utilities out when we move in?
Do we just ring up the first day and talk to water/electricity/gas/internet etc. providers as soon as we're in? If so, how long does it usually take to get each one sorted?
Is it quicker to just stick with who the previous owners were using because it's all hooked up already? (e.g EDF currently provides their gas and electricity) or is it just as easy to ring up someone else?
We want to have everything "working" (so to speak) ASAP so any advice would be great!!!

Congratulations!
With gas / water / electricitiy, these should be working (as long as they where not disconnected) when you move in. Just note down the relevant meter readings then phone up your preferred supplier(s).
With telephone / internet, now that you have exchanged it may be worth arranging this now before you move. Unlike your gas / leccy, you wont have a working phone / t'internet when you move in! For me personally I'd be arranging my 'installation dates' now!!

Ah that makes total sense re. electricity! (sorry - total home owner noob!)
I'll have a look at what supplier we want and see if they can come in next Friday!
Am I right in thinking that water is by the provider that covers our area and so we can't change this? i.e. I believe ours is southern
thanks so much!DEBT FREE AT LAST!

Yes, that's right - no choice at the moment. But if the property is on a meter it might be worth switching to get metered: it depends on how much you use!0
