Student loan repayment

I have recently started a new job which i get a car allowance for. My annual salary is under the threshold for deferment of my student loan (pre 1998 mortgage style) but the car allowance takes me over this and SLC are demanding payment.
Has anyone else has this problem? The payments are high I am reluctant to start paying unless i really need to. Advisor at SLC told me that if i was reimbursed by my employer for the use of a car this would not be taken into account but surely this is the same thing. I use my whole car allowance to pay for a car and do not have the funds for payments from my salary alone.
