Cant afford Gas Bills, HELP

Hello

Ive just had my 3rd energy bill for 2013 and my gas is calculated at £142 (total 4011 Kwh).

My house is a 2 bedroom terrace and is unoocupied for 10 hours a day – I have an old imperial meter and first utility have said that theyre charging me correctly.

I dont ever use my fire, and the heating is only ever on for an hour a day if that.

Its getting to the point where I can no longer afford my energy bills – has anybody got any advice, or does this seem expensive?!

Does this bill cover the winter period? £47 per month in the winter sounds really good to me, or are you getting billed monthly? Have you shopped around for the best tariff and paid monthly by DD to reduce it even further?
  • This is monthly @Worried Jim - Ive shopped around yes and I pay by monthly DD

A gas boiler can not use 133 kWh in one hour.

It is possible to use £143 in a month or 133 kWh in a day (and is reasonable for winter).

How much do you use for just hot water and cooking when there is no heating? Remember the £143 is spread over the year. What is your monthly direct debit?

Of course if you genuinely only have the heating on for one hour then something is amiss - meters could be mixed up between properties. Keep your heating on for two or three hours at least and see how much you use over an evening or two.

Do the serial numbers on your bills correspond with those on the meter? Does the meter move when you use your gas?

So what was your kWh usage in Jan and Feb, whichh were similarly very cold months? What else are you using gas for-cooking, hot water?
Do you have debt on the account which is pushing your DD up?

Assuming the bill is correct have you looked at your insulation or considered an Energy Trust application?
