I assumed (perhaps wrongly) that OP's reference to her working on cleaning jobs and struggling to make ends meet, meant that her OH is not on means tested ESA. So yes, OP, it would be helpful if you could clarify this.I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0

OP this might sound easier said than done, but try not to let 'holding on to benefits' cloud your judgement and stop you from using the money to improve and enrich your life now, as it should. Aged 56, doing cleaning jobs and struggling to make ends meet, you could do a lot to make things better for you and your husband with £50k. The pension from £50k will not be huge and there's no telling what benefit changes may be around the corner. I'm not suggesting that you go out and splurge on junk and rubbish, but that you use it sensibly to make your life better now.0

You can use the money to improve your day to day standard of living and to maintain your house and replace items that are old and decripit.
So insulation, draught -proofing, a new boiler if needed would not be DOA.If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0
