Wrong serial number for electicity meter

Maybe someone has come across this problem and know who to contact. It seems there must be one main register in the UK where all electricity/gas meters and the address relating to them are kept.

When we moved into our house about 6 years ago we had a problem switching to Scottish Hydro. It took a long time to get this sorted as it seems the serial number for our electricity meter is registered to a house two doors down. I would have thought Scottish Hydro would have sorted the UK register, but obviously not. I have resisted changing just because I thought we may have the same problem again. Went to Uswitch and looked at everything and the saving to NPower was to good to ignore. That was Oct/Nov last year and still this has not been sorted.

So, does anyone know who to contact directly to sort this out as it seems the electricity companies are incapable of doing it.

So have you been paying for your neighbours usage for the past 6 years and someone else paying for yours? If it was eventually sorted out then it would have the correct serial number on your bill. Does this match with the serial number on your meter?

There is not a central register.

The meter operator appointed by your supplier is resopnsile for holiding your current meter details. Any change they make will be sent to ECOES is probably what you refer to.

Of course it is quite possible for your supplier to ignore what their meter operator says and go with their own data. They should however not. Getting the meter operator to update your details can also be hard. If they are the meter operator for the other site they might not want to do it and create a duplicate. If they are not the meter operator they may not because they cannot fix the other site. On the whole it can be confusing. However regardless they should correct yours if given evidence to say they are wrong and X is right.

Unfortunatly for you your only contact is your supplier. Meter operators rarely want to deal with third partys, which you are in this case as their customer is your supplier.

Your best bet is to ask someone with access to ecoes to check what is held. You can probably PM freindly types on here, but you will have to trust them with your info.

ECOES of course applies only to electric. However it's much the same on the gas side with different names for things!

What serial number is on your bill, is it the correct one? If so it is just ECOES that is wrong. If no everyone has the wrong one. Either way I would right to your supplier requesting that this issue is resolved, personally I would raise it as a complaint.
