Closing threads, why and when ?

Options
Hi

I'm just trying to understand the logic in closing threads. I can see that some discussions will just fizzle out, why is the "closure" mechanism needed at all ?

Thus on the "Gas & Electricity" board there is a thread "Gazco fires - experiences". The thread is closed, but Gazco still make fires, and people will still have issues in getting them serviced. And I believe I can provide a 2013 update on the information presented there. I could start a new thread, but how much more useful for the reader if all the relevant information remains together.

On the "In my home (includes DIY) MoneySaving" board there is a thread about a very specific Gazco fire, it has been quiet for a bit longer than the above thread, but it is still open. Is this because this board typically has longer "expiry times" ?

    Hello Chordeiles

I'm a board guide on the 'In my home (includes DIY)' board. To my knowledge it doesn't have longer expiry times than any other board.

Sometimes threads are locked by the Forum Team. Sometimes they are locked by a board guide and reported to the Forum Team.........and they take a look at the thread and decide whether it should remain locked.

It might seem to lack logic but there could be several reasons why a thread is locked/closed.

Sometimes the OP asks for the thread to be locked.;)

    Regards
