I decided to get the first direct account for the 125 that is been offered as an incentive. As part of the application I have been asked to send an original passport/tax calculation/PAYE coding....etc
Is this usual??

It's quite normal to be subject to identity checks when opening your first account with a new provider. It's part of the fraud prevention process.0 -
I would say its pretty unusual if I'm honest.
Then all things must be unusual to you!! Its standard practice.
Its a legal requirement that all financial institutions must identify its customers.
If they can't do it electronically then they will request paper identification.
Perhaps the OP isn't on the electoral roll and that's why they are requesting the documentation they are.Time is a path from the past to the future and back again. The present is the crossroads of both. :cool:0 -

Completely usual that you have to pass ID check before any bank/BS opens any account for you. They are required by law to make sure they have verified your ID.
If you are on the electoral roll and/or if your CRA files are correct, an online application usually sails through as far as the ID check is concerned. Otherwise you will be required to provide other proof of your identity.
What is not usual is that anyone asks for an original passport or originals of other important documents. No way would any bank or anyone else get my original passport etc. Call them and ask what other forms of ID they will accept.
You could also search the forum, there have been other reports of the problem & resolution.0
