    It can be done.

    But not with "investments".

Buying and selling items such as watches, jewellery, cars, motorbikes, etc, then yes I'd say so. And even then you have to know what you're doing, specialise in a few items/areas that you know (or can learn) really well, and be ready to jump in when the rare uber-deals present themselves.

I've been doing exactly that as a hobby for years, I average a few grand a year in profits, and I enjoy the items while I own them. I spend a an hour or two a week looking for deals online, use and enjoy the items I buy, and resell once I get bored of owning whatever it is.

If I ever quit my job I'd be confident I could earn a basic living just doing that.

But I'd have to put a bit more time into it than I do now!

My step father did it with classic(ish) cars, hence my 80 year old mother driving and having to try to park a very old convertible Merc.

Its possible, and doesnt need to be high risk either. Some special situations can return return multiples of the original investment with very limited downside.

But they arent very common, so first of all theyd have to happen, second youd have to find them.

For 10x youd need a few special situations in a row and youd need to go in big on them. Unlikely to be honest, but possible in the right year.

10x is very possuble however is you use high leverage, but that also i creases your risk of being wiped out
Faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.
  • I think to pro-actively try and do this over 12 months through investments is very risky! Over a longer time frame maybe.

Sounds like to make that kind of return you would be making higher risk investment choices which could have equally bad results as well as good.

I think if this is something anyone is considering you have to be willing to accept that you could also lose the £1000 investment. Even with time spent reading up on this the market is volatile and can turn.

Not saying it's not possible, but the odds of achieving that in a year seem pretty low to me.
