Survey Payment Up Front?

Hi all,
I'm in the process of buying my first house and have gotten some valuable information from this forum over the past couple of weeks - so wanted to start off by saying thanks to all contributors.
I got a quote for a surveyor from reallymoving, price seems reasonable and he has had some good reviews on there, spoke to him on the phone and he sounded professional, but one thing he said was that he asks for payment up front before the survey is done. I asked about it and he said it's so that you don't just get the survey and run off without paying, which I can understand. I just wanted to check if that was standard practice for surveyors or should alarm bells be ringing?
The firm are regulated by RICS and I have confirmed that by finding the listing on the RICS website.
Thanks for any advice!

Absolutely standard practice.Stop! Think. Read the small print. Trust nothing and assume that it is your responsibility. That way it rarely goes wrong.
Actively hunting down the person who invented the imaginary tenure, "share freehold"; if you can show me one I will produce my daughter's unicorn0 -
People who don't get the answer they wanted often thrown their toys out of the pram - just look at some of the threads on this forum
As such it's not unreasonable for the Surveyor to ask for payment in advance.0
