Has anyone here used autotrader recently. I am selling a car and have listed it on gumtree but was also wondering if it was worth paying the £36 for two weeks on autotrader?

Has anyone any recent experience of using autotrader?

My brother advertised his car in paper and on Gumtree but after 2 weeks he decided try sell his car on Auto Trader. Within 3 days he had 2 phone calls. Its daunting how much Auto trader charges however its one of the most popular sites. Especially on mobile apps.

What i would say is do make yourself aware of all the possible scams going around these days, its very bad how far these have escalated.

What i would recommend highly is use social networking sites like Facebook. Look for groups or Sale groups and pages local to you, advertise on their. Its free and another great way to let everybody see.
Better to understand a little than to misunderstand a lot.
  • Hmmmm hard to say. OH is forever looking about at cars and bikes, and will always check online first. Of the 5 or 6 regular sites he uses, Autotrader isn't even one of them! :p He'll glance through Autotrader once in a while. The mag has shrunk dramatically over the years, and there only seems to be very few pages dedicated to NI.

If you've already tried Gumtree and other online sites with no success, then no harm trying the Autotrader. There will still be the regulars who would check there first before anywhere else!!

    Good luck!

  • lol :) Yes I'm well aware of that thanks!! OH never checks it though. Sometimes I think he only picks up the mag so he can comment on how skinny it is now! :p

£4750, I was thinking that might be a factor Gumtree might be better for a cheaper car

Yes. I would run with autotrader, although as gumtree is free, you could stick it on there anyway.

Maybe try https://www.usedcarsni.com as well - it's about £4 for 4 weeks on there, and lots of people use it, especially for the price range you're selling in. Agree with trying gumtree as well. Delete your ad and re-post every couple of days on gumtree to keep it near the top of the listings.

Make sure to watch for the scam where people offer to pay by paypal and collect the car, usually without even viewing it.

The money will enter your account but the person who purchased your car will say they never received it. Not proof of postage - paypal will refund the money. You will be liable. This scam is rife on gumtree and unsedcarsni.

The money never gets to you in the first place - they send an email from 'paypal' saying the funds are being held for you and will be release to you on your say so only. Of course this email is fake and no funds were ever there.
