I've just sold my first item on ebay - a kids violin. So now it's time for postage...
It's larger than a royal mail parcel but when I look at parcelforce the cheapest you can have is nearly £ 10
Am I missing something? What is the cheapest way of sending a violin through the mail? Do I need to get it signed for etc? It's from NI to Wales.

I would recommend a courier, but most have them have musical instruments as prohibited goods, meaning if it's damaged, you wont receive any compensation.
Also, I don't mean to "rub your nose in it" but isn't this statement the wrong way round? :I've just sold my first item on ebay - a kids violin. So now it's time for postage...Warning: any unnecessary disclaimers appearing under my posts do not bear any connection with reality, either intended, accidental or otherwise. You need to send it by what ever means you stated in your listing, so if you stated Royal Mail then you will have to use that.

Like I said, you are not allowed to send musical instruments through myhermes.Warning: any unnecessary disclaimers appearing under my posts do not bear any connection with reality, either intended, accidental or otherwise. Your statutory rights are not affected.0 -

I think there is a difference between not being allowed to send, and sending at your own risk.
The MyHermes exemptions cover virtually everything I sell , but they are insured against loss still but just not damage. There are some items that are completely not covered neither for loss nor damage- so always check the small print
Musical instruments seem to be a rather tricky thing to send with full insurance as far as I can see.
Anyway, OP logged out as soon as they posted, so obviously despatch time is not an issue.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. I've looked into myhermes - it's £4.97 to send included having it signed for. It's just a kids violin so not expensive and has had a few knocks already so doubt much would happen in the post.0

Don't forget to pay for extra insurance against loss if item is more than £25.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards.
