Laptop won't charge up

I went to switch on my laptop this morning and it wouldn't switch on despite the charger lead being plugged in and the plug socket being switched on.

There was no light on the side of the laptop to say that the charger was plugged in.

I removed the battery from the laptop and plugged in the charger again and it has just started up with no problem.

Am I to assume that there's a problem with the laptop battery? And is it a problem that can be fixed please? I often unplug my laptop and use it while it is just powered by the battery. I really don't want to have it connected to the mains all the time to be able to use it.

Can anyone help please?

1.) If you unplug the battery and plug the power cord in, does the laptop power on?

If YES: it is likely you have a faulty battery and it will ned replacing.
If NO: your laptop is not receiving sufficient power – or possibly any at all.

2.) If you you have another power adapter (or one from another laptop with the same voltage)?
Try connecting it and if it charges your original power adapter is faulty and needs replacing.

3.)Also check the jack (hole) where the charger goes and ensure its not just wobbling around and all lose.

I'm on the laptop now (was on the netbook when I posted my problem above).

I've taken the battery out of the laptop and plugged the power cord in and it's working fine.
So, looks as though it's a faulty battery. :(

Not sure where to go to get a replacement. Can you advise me please?

    Thanks for your help.

Sorry to hear that, this happens to many people over a certain time period. I could list so many sites like Amazon and Ebay, And even google your laptop model. If you like tell us which it is and il have a quick look and try find you cheapest (other posters may have more better information on where to look) however i dont mind looking for you.

I wouldn't totally rule out the power adaptor being dodgy.

For instance the part where wires come out of the power supply is quite vulnerable if you often travel with the power supply; all that bending can make the wires break under the insulation.

If this happens then "wobbling" the wire near the power supply can make it go on and off, and it may be that when you took out the battery the power supply wire moved to a different position which made it work.

Check the DC output from the mains adaptor with a multimeter.
Failure of the charging jack is about the most comon issue with laptops, they're subject to stress on the cable, and eventually the solder joint fails.

Like the above posters have said and like i mentioned, you will receive more input over the time on this, it could be various factors and its all down to testing them. If its the battery I've just had a quick shop around some of the popular sites. Ive found:

    Ebay £15.84
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HP-Compaq-Presario-CQ32-CQ42-CQ43-CQ56-CQ57-CQ58-CQ62-CQ72-CQ430-CQ630-Battery-/300841778612?pt=UK_Computing_LaptopsAccessories_LaptopBatteries&hash=item460b913db4

    Amazon £29.90
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Laptop-Battery-Compaq-Presario-Notebook/dp/B007YW1C1I

    Battery Depot £24.99

    http://www.battdepot.com/uk/model/notebook+battery/compaq/presario+cq56+series/lhp234.aspx

I found these 3 with a quick search, ebay seems the cheapest. I did check that it wasnt just some standard cheap model imported from china, i could not guarantee the seller / shop hasnt done this but they have so many good reviews even more on Amazon.

The batterys above are only based on 4400 mAh which i believe is standard you can if wanted to buy a much bigger capacity which you will come across on the internet which i believe is 6600 mAh.

Like any purchase do check and confirm it fits your laptop first, check the picture and read the description.

Hope its helped in any way. Hope you sort it.
