Still looking into soundproofing anyway, as I'm sure whoever moved into the house after me would appreciate it too. Doesn't seem that expenisve if you can do the work yourself. And a quiet home is priceless....
EDIT - wow, you can also download sounds of a vacuum cleaner or hair dryer!!
for some people yes, I tried a fan as it's the same principal, the sound is similar but not quite as pure.
It won't drown out loud music and bass is more a vibration so would do little for that but when I tried it, it did stop me from hearing upstair's TV, that kind of sound.
I didn't think I could sleep with a fan going but it's surprising how quick you get used to it.
At first you hear the fan, so the back ground noises are masked, then your brain stops hearing the fan sound too.
Lucky my neighbours are only here at the weekends so I haven't bothered buying the marpac.0 -

I have used these guys twice and have been happy. Noise was significantly reduced but not eliminated. Try to talk to Stuart who is a font of knowledge and gave me a lot of free advice.

Thanks jc808, I'll get my handy person friend to have a look at those instructions. My floors downstairs are concrete. It's an ex LA house so I suspect it may be better built than if I had a new built (I don't hear everyday noises, only loud music, as a rule, however, when I had the external walls insulated a few years ago they told me that the top half of the house is just breeze blocks with tiles on top (very odd house it is....)
Sunshinetours - I did a search before posting but obviously didnt use the right key words cos I coudn't find much. I did find interestingly though that magic sponges are the same material used in soundproofing...wonder how many of those i would need??!!

In case anyone else reading this thread has the same problem, I found a good source of info here too: http://www.ourproperty.co.uk/guides/how_to_soundproof_your_house.htmlLess stuff, more life, love, laughter and cats!
Even if I'm on the shopping threads, it doesn't mean I'm buying! Sometimes it's good to just look and then hit the CLOSE button!0 -

You poor thing Tina. I've got some great earplugs too, but it always worries me sleeping with them as I won't hear if anything goes wrong in my own house...smoke alarm, burglars etc etc )-:
At least hopefully your situation is temporary...I lived under a couple with laminate flooring once, it was awful, even though they were very considerate.Less stuff, more life, love, laughter and cats!
