The Hotbin is made from polypropylene not polystyrene, when I rang them to enquire what it was made of they said it was the same material as car bumpers?? I don't have a problem with rats at all, the worst problem I have is that my cat likes to sharpen his claws on the side of it! :rotfl:
Sorry, I wasn't meaning the Hotbin, I was referring to comments about insulation board etc, presuming that they were a type of polystyrene? I composted all of the cardboard packaging from my new kitchen a couple of years ago and used some of the polystyrene packaging for cover until I was warned. Have to say that I didn't see any sign of rats but am careful to only add raw kitchen scraps as advised.

Thanks to everyone who contributes to this wonderful forum. I'm very grateful for the guidance and friendliness that I always receive from you.

  • Wow - I was not expecting to see HOTBIN on a moneysaving forum. Glad to hear working. There are loads of hints and tips on our hotbin composting blog.

  • Hi You can make some gains by using insulation panels on a nornal 'pallet' frame type bin, but most heat in compost bin is lost via convective heat loss (not conductive) so you need to also control gas flow. Nearest analogy I can think of is pressure cooker. You can read about the technical in/outs of conductive and convective insulation at our hotbin composting blog.
  • You can make some gains using insulation panels - but ensure they are 100% waterproof. I believe Celotex is the product I tested and it is an "open" cell PU foam - so it absorbs water. It will be wet within weeks and lose insulation. you can read about the technical in/outs conductive and convective insulation at our hotbin composting blog.
  • Rats are attracted by odour (= food) and they seek out warm dry nesting sites. Polystyrene and Polypropylene have no odour or nutrient value to vermin - rats are not attracted to them and do not eat them. Loose polystyrene balls are a potential nesting material so in base of pots it could make a nest site. Rats would already be in the area or would need to be attracted to food in area. Hope this helps
