Typically the reason for Paypal to start using echeques is the card on file with Paypal has expired.

    Paypal's help pages say:

PayPal's eCheque feature allows you to transfer money directly from your bank account to another person's PayPal account. eCheque payments are different to Instant bank transfers, as they are not instant.

To send money instantly you must have both a valid credit card (or debit card) and a bank account added to your PayPal account. The money will be debited from your bank as an instant bank transfer while the card acts as a back-up payment method in case the bank transfer fails. If you don’t have a valid debit or credit card registered to your account at the time of payment and if your PayPal balance is not enough to cover the payment, it will be sent as an eCheque instead.

To make instant bank transfers again you must add a current credit or debit card to your PayPal account or update the details of an existing card. You can add a credit or debit card to your PayPal account through your account Profile.
