My surname is difficult - infact it's horrid, I've got used to people stuttering and not knowing how to pronounce it, then saying where is that from like I must not be a brit even
I've noticed people suddenly becoming more name focussed I have to say, doesn't stop me getting interviews though, even with a tacky email address for applications because I just didn't want to have one surname incorporated plus lessens someone spelling it wrong! ha ha! - well it has worked so far, idea for you OP0 -

I guess its worth sending two CVs to the same place, one with a 'smart' name and one in the original and see what happens...I suppose if nothing else it'll prove or disprove your theory.0
