Floor joists and Rafters - treated or untreated?

Regarding the wood for Floor joists and Rafters, should it be treated or untreated?

Is there a particular name for this wood i.e. sawn softwood, kiln dried etc?

Comments

  • It is untreated and just called sawn in our area, depending on the span would depend on the grade which would normally be C16 or C24 the highest number being the stonger, the number would normally be stamped on the timber.

I would prefer treated - you never know when or where damp or infestation might occur.

Joists should be regularised and kiln dried, plus stress graded as mentioned in the above post.
