Hi,
I am thinking of applying for one of the above basic accounts, as i seem to be struggling to get a debit card.
The only think is, that my nearest branch is in London, and i dont want to travel for a couple of hours to be declined.
Has anyone been declined for this account?
I have not been declared bankrupt, and have no history of fraud.
Any help would be apreciated.
Thanks
Dan.

Hi Dan
I think you will be fine, I have not heard of anyone being declined. I have one and the only check they did was to make sure I was not currently bankrupt. The card is also a full Maestro card. I say this as some companies issuing prepaid cards, I had a 360 Money Premium Card at one point, and although it had the Maestro logo on it, it was numbered as a SOLO card.

I should add you can apply by post. You have to literally drag the application form out of them, and they dont like it, but I managed and thats how I opened the account. James0

Thanks for that James.
Did you not have to visit a branch at all?0 -
My pleasure.
I did in the end to show my ID, but I think it can also be done by post. I worked in their (National Australia's) mortgage processing department, and often a passport photocopy, and driving license photocopy was signed to say it was a "true and original" copy, thats not the exact wording but it was along those lines. I think anyone from your local postmaster, to bank staff can do that for you, nearer to home so you dont have to travel to London. They might try to charge you for it though.

I applied for Basic bank accounts with Natwest, Co-op, Citibank and Nationwide and was declined. I managed to get a Lloyds TSB basic account but found it quite restrictive as it doesn't have a debit card and you can only use the card in Lloyds TSB cash machines. A few weeks ago I decided to apply for the Clydesdale Bank Readycash account after reading about other peoples experiences on this forum. I explained to the advisor that i had a bad credit rating due to defaulting on my current account with Halifax and my credit card when I lost my job last year and she said that there would be no problems at all opening the account and that it was available to anyone as long as they are not bankrupt or have a history of fraud - she never even mentioned doing a credit check. Less than a week later I had my new Maestro debit card which I can use in any cash machine! The advisor also said that after a few months of regular credits they may look at upgrading my account. I don't think you will have any problems at all opening this account and should go for it!0

I am still really pleased with my Clydesdale account. I love being treated like a proper human being. I can use the card everywhere and the online banking is great.
We explained that we are repaying debt and it would still be a while yet and they said that they would look at upgrading the account in the future based on how the account was operated. I know it might take a while but I am so much happier that when the time comes they are going to consider our conduct now and not just the position we got into when I was ill. A bit of hope.0 -
I agree it is a very good account, the Maestro card works just the same as if it was a 3-in-1 card with cheque guarantee facility, it came through in less than a week. It shows on Tesco's receipts as Maestro, as opposed to the prepaid "Maestro" card i had that showed up everywhere as SOLO. Plus you have full access to internet and telephone banking.

Having read online about the Yorkshire bank ready cash and how good the staff are I decided to apply for one as recently opened a co op account but have found that my full Visa debit is treated like an electron card at Asda's automated fuel stations.
I phoned the main switch board and was informed as I didn’t already bank with them that I would have to go into a branch to open an account. My nearest branch is in High Wycombe about 25 miles away. They took my phone number and arranged for someone from the branch to give me a call to make an appointment. When I got to the appointment the advisor was very friendly and helpful but he did explain to me that they would be doing a credit check. When I said I had been looking online and I didn’t think they did that he said it’s a new policy bought in the last week. We went through all the details and I signed the relevant forms and was then informed that it had been referred to head office and I they would call me tomorrow to let me know if I had been accepted. As I say the advisor was very good and stated he thinks the only problem might have been where I recently opened the co op account that it may have left footprints on my credit score but I do believe if they have bought in the credit check basis then they could have at least let me go through the application over the phone or online to see if I am approved for the account before making me drive a 50+ round trip to show I’d possibly for nothing. That said I'm hoping I will be approved and be able to bank with them as I liked what I heard about them. Just thought you should all be aware they have increased there criteria though

If you are going to open a Readycash account I think that, unless you have branches of the Yorkshire near you, you are better off going for the Clydesdale one, because you can paying cash and cheques at any Post Office. As far as I know the Yorkshire version does not allow that. Which is odd as Yorkshire and Clydesdale are actually the same bank. Not just owned by the same company, but the same bank.0
