Intermittent very slight hesitation on Golf 1.6 petrol engined car.
Hi, I have a 2006 Golf Mark5 1.6 petrol engined car. I bought it two years ago when it had done 55,500 miles. It has run smoothly for another 14,000 miles since purchase.
It had a full service about 2 months ago and has again run smoothly for over 1,000 miles.
However recently my wife and I have both noticed an occasional very slight hesitation as if the engine has very briefly lost power or cylinders are missing. It happens more or less at all speeds and revs so isn’t linked to being in too high a gear.
I though maybe it was a poor batch of Tesco petrol but it continued after I filled an empty tank with Shell. I use standard not premium unleaded.
Yesterday we drove 60 miles to Surrey and the hesitation happened occasionally. Today we drove home and it hardly happened at all.
It gets lots of short 2, 3 or 4 mile journeys but also gets regular longer runs of 50 plus miles.
Any thoughts?
Thanks.

could be many things
leads, plugs?
A £10-15 obd code reader might show something up, or might not!!

Are you sure its not the air conditioning compressor starting up?0

Sounds like the very common issue that one of the engine management sensors is beginning to play up. If you are only using the car on short trips, take it for a long hard drive. Otherwise, have to get the ECU checked for fault codes - each engine glitch might be recorded in there.0

I had the same problem with my Golf, and it was due to muck and debris clogging the petrol tank filter leading to intermittent fuel starvation.

Not possible...... This thread is ALL lies!!!!
VW Golf are the most reliable cars on the road, my friends, my parents and my grandparents ALL owned them in 1980-1985 and ALL say the same!!!“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Thanks everyone for your comments, even Strider because you made me smile.

It isn't the aircon and it has had quite a few long runs of 50 plus miles at 70 to 80 mph. It could be a fuel problem.
I'll take it in to the place that last serviced it and see if they can diagnose a fault. If not I'll try the local VW service centre.
Thanks again. :beer:0 -
code reader may prove cheaper.!!

I'm updating this thread as the problem has reappeared worse than ever.
I did take it to my local independent service garage and they could not find any fault via the diagnostic reader. They didn't charge me anything for checking unlike other places that wanted £40 and more just to plug in a diagnostic reader....I'll take it in to the place that last serviced it and see if they can diagnose a fault.
Anyway the problem disappeared a few days later and the car has run well for another 7,000 miles or so in the 20 months since. I had it serviced a month or so ago and nothing unusual was noticed.
A few days ago both my wife and I noticed that the very slight hesitation has reappeared. On two 50 mile runs earlier this week it was quite bad at times, definitely worse than before.
The diagnostics again shows no fault and the garage are at a loss to explain what the problem might be. They are a long established place with a decent reputation and they have done all the servicing work on the car since I bought it four years ago.
Should I try a VAG dealer or is there something I can ask my normal service garage to try such as cleaning the fuel lines as Olias suggested?

Suspect the coil pack is cracked and change the water trap fuel filter.I do Contracts, all day every day.0

I would put my money on a coil pack going ape. Had this on my other car, dropped into dealership and they swapped a new one in although car was out of warranty. You scullion! You rampallian! You fustilarian! I’ll tickle your catastrophe (Henry IV part 2)0
