Changing my surname after marriage

Hi
I got married in July 2010 and am going to change my surname on my passport. Apart from bank accounts and utility bills, is there any other companies I need to contact once my name has been changed?

Also once I change my name and are given new debit and credit cards will I have to change direct debits and standing orders that are already set up?

  • Don't forget, if you are changing your name on your passport, you have to renew your passport completely (ie pay for a new one), and they will only give you 9 months extra time to cover the old one, so if you've still got a few years left have a think about whether it's really worth it.

That really depends on whether you tell the companies of your change of name....at present they will claim them usually under a reference number which is linked to your personal details ie name and address....if you change your name and address with the company it wont make any difference to the reference number but might make it easier if they have to look up anything manually as a query

Same with you bank cards..you'll be issued new cards in your new name but the physical account number will stay the same so the details companies use to collect money from your account will not change.

Land Registry is on MrsDrink's list so if you are mentioned on the land register for any land/property in England & Wales then read our online Public Guide 22 and section 4 in particular

As I still have a mortgage on my house would I still need to contact the Land Registry?

Whether you have a mortgage or not is irrelevant - it is posisble that you think that as you have a mortgage then the property is legally the lenders? That is not the case as they are simply securing the loan against your property.

if you are the legal owner then you will be registered as the proprietor and presumably under you maiden name. We would strongly recommend that you update this as per the guidance provided in PG22.
