    By an EA? ;)
  • Yes by the estate agent, now whether he passes this onto the solicitor I don't know, as strangely our solicitor hasnt asked for any id...yet! When would solicitor want id? We have provided bills to the address but that's all.

I actually thought the EAs were talking tosh, but a look at the HMRC site does show that Estate Agents are covered by Money Laundering Regulations. This does surprise me, however it doesn't state what their responsibilities are. Therefore it might not be their responsibility to confirm the identity of buyers.
Don't listen to me, I'm no expert!

They are covered by money laundering regulations for people they have contracts with. Which is not the buyers.

But I can well imagine that they ask anyway and bend the truth as to why, purely because it probably weeds out some timewasters and gives them a chance to get you in the office to sell you affiliated services.

It was my own estate agent who asked for the id, they sold my property for me and I'm buying one from them, it was for the purchase he asked for the id. At no point as my ea tried to sell me anything, he knew we had a mortgage advisor and solicitor so never pushed.

Well, some muddle there. I can see him having grounds to ask in relation to your sale, but not for the purchase.
You might as well ask the Wizard of Oz to give you a big number as pay a Credit Referencing Agency for a so-called 'credit-score'

He also asked my buyers for id to. We received a letter from him stating he needed the Id for laundering purposes. Like I say he may well
Have just passed these to the solicitor I'm not sure.

There is some official ambiguity here as shown in the links given by k)sh. No doubt officialdom would like EA's to check out buyers, but the Money Laundering regs don't actually provide for this. Hnece with a lot of the official material which is cited when this issue comes up, the need to check buyers is implied, but never firmly stated.
