retrieving lost emails

My laptop has had a hard drive failure so have had a new hard drive fitted.
I use windows live mail to receive emails for one of my aol email addresses but since the crash I can only get emails from 10-4-13 showing and nothing before then. I have also lost all contacts etc. Is there anyway of getting these back either just the emails or both. I don't have the original hard drive as it was useless and they only managed to get some documents from it but nothing else.
When I have logged into the aol mail site nothing is showing up on there either.
Lastly how do I back up emails and contacts in the future?
