im going to phone them tomorrow before i send them anything. i dont think i can send them their form back (the police form) with the traders details because the trader does not have that car anymore, clearly someone else does - but i have no idea who that is.

By all means phone them, but they will tell you to put the trader's details on.

The wording on the form will be "I was not the driver because the car was sold/disposed of/hired/leased to: _______". This is the section you fill in.

The police will then send an identical document to the trader and it will be for the trader to declare who he sold it to..

Note that there is another section on the form "I was not the driver, the driver was: ______". Do not fill in this section. That is the section you would fill in if your son or your mate was driving.

Like I said in my last post, this is really standard stuff, there are often several people written to before the driver is found, consider a company car where the chain may go Lease company -> company head office -> company branch office -> company car driver -> driver's partner. That's 5 NIPs before they get the driver.

A chain of you -> trader -> dude who bought the car is nothing abnormal at all. They literally deal with hundreds of similar chains daily and will not even bat an eyelid.
